Out of all the hotels I’ve stayed in on this trip—Ibis Gare du Midi, Ibis Nuremberg Altstadt, Dorint and Ibis Mariahilfer—the Dorint is the only hotel where the A/C unit in the room actually works. Even though the control panel in all the other hotels seems to be working it has no effect on the actual A/C units. The Dorint is the only hotel where I can actually change the temperature in my room myself. Out of all the hotels the Dorint is the only one that has a good internet terminal for guests in the lobby—the ones in the Max Brussels, Ibis Nuremberg and Ibis Mariahilfer are all virtually unusable. I just had to abandon my attempt to do all I wanted in the Ibis Mariahilfer; it did not allow copy & paste. Terrible. Surprised and pleased to see the Ibis Mariahilfer has a music channel, Deluxe, same as the Ibis Nuremberg, but it is NOT as good as the Dorint’s GoTV. That is a great music channel. Yes, being forced to leave the Dorint has disturbed my equilibrium and spoiled my mojo. If I cannot stay at the Dorint for my entire trip in future I will change my travel dates.
The Ibis Mariahilfer is a big place; I’m on the 11th floor. Don’t think I’ve ever been in a hotel room this high before.
Friday was a bit of a waste of a day really. Having to change hotels at midday threw me out of sync. I walked down to the Ibis and checked in, ate the two rolls I picked up from the station, then went straight back out to Café Westend for a rostbraten, which to be honest I struggled to finish. I stumbled back to the hotel and slept for the rest of the afternoon. Getting up early enough to prepare for a night out, I really didn’t feel in the mood at all. I crossed over to ML Revue just to confirm again that their kabins are rubbish; never wasting my time there again. Train up to Club Exzess. The girls all take turns to dance topless on small stage but there were none I liked enough to stay for. Back down to Manhattan and Tete a Tete but even though I saw all the same girls as last night, this time I just felt no desire or interest at all. Just one beer in each place and I was ready to leave. Thrilled to find the station McDonald’s still open so I brought a hamburger royale & fries back to hotel, but again struggled to finish them, beset by hiccups that would not stop.
How lovely to be back in a Dorint hotel room. Not only was there a Granny Smith apple left in the room for me—the only kind of apple I like—but they had stocked the minibar with just the things I drink, so there were 6 bottles of Gösser beer instead of the normal 2, 2 bottles of sparkling water instead of 1 sparkling 1 flat, and 1 bottle of coke. It is like they studied my minibar habits and stocked the minibar especially for me! Amazing. That is the personal touch.
The carpet in my Ibis Altstadt hotel was beautiful—all poppies. Like it was designed by some absolute opium addict. A real German Thomas de Quincey. I was thrilled to discover they had a nice music channel as well! So unusual these days. Rather good one as well, Deluxe. Lot of songs I’ve never heard before, lots of German music. Excellent. I will certainly always stay at this hotel if I come to Nuremberg again. Next time I travel to Vienna I expect I will give Frankfurt another try. For the first time ever today I will be arriving at the new Wien Hauptbahnhof rather than my beloved Westbahnhof. It means getting a tram to my hotel, if I can work out which one I need to get.
