The carpet in my Ibis Altstadt hotel was beautiful—all poppies. Like it was designed by some absolute opium addict. A real German Thomas de Quincey. I was thrilled to discover they had a nice music channel as well! So unusual these days. Rather good one as well, Deluxe. Lot of songs I’ve never heard before, lots of German music. Excellent. I will certainly always stay at this hotel if I come to Nuremberg again. Next time I travel to Vienna I expect I will give Frankfurt another try. For the first time ever today I will be arriving at the new Wien Hauptbahnhof rather than my beloved Westbahnhof. It means getting a tram to my hotel, if I can work out which one I need to get.

I don’t feel an attachment to any streets in London, except perhaps Charing Cross Station, Charing Cross Road, Shaftesbury Avenue, Fleet Street for its literary associations, Ernest Dowson in particular, and Commercial Street and Aldgate for its Jack the Ripper associations. I feel so much more connection with streets like the Gurtel in Vienna, or Schillerstraße and Goethestraße in Munich, Stuttgarter Platz in Berlin, basically roads where I have had erotic experiences. In that light I suppose I must add Dean Street to my short list of London places that mean anything to me, as it is where I saw my first naked woman (in Sunset Strip strip club basement when the curtain opened and some girl came on dancing to Tallulah), and later where I lost my virginity (in the model’s flat at 61 Dean Street). Old Compton Street was the site of Carnival Strip club, the second strip club I ever went to, Brewer Street is the site of the Astral Cinema , the first porn cinema I ever went to, and later Sunset Cinema, the first porn cinema where I ever had erotic experience with women customers. It was in Oxford Street that Thomas de Quincey bought his first ever tincture of opium and began the lifetime of addiction so memorably recorded in Confessions of an English Opium Eater; it was in the warren of little streets just off of Oxford Street that I began my career of infamy with strip clubs, porn cinemas & “French models”.
